What do you know about Black History? That is, what do you think you know? The Civil Rights Movement didn't start with Black Lives Matter, the 1963 March on Washington, or the Civil War. Unfortunately, it didn't start with the American Revolution, either, a revolution based on freedom and equality that tragically left half of the American population far from free or equal.
Set in the summer of 1800, GABRIEL, THE MUSICAL tells the story of the largest planned slave revolution in American history. The rebellion would have overthrown the government of Virginia and brought freedom to thousands.
Based on the true and little known Richmond story, this world premiere portrays the state-wide insurrection led by Gabriel, a literate blacksmith enslaved on Thomas Prosser's plantation in Henrico. Never heard of Gabriel? Then come find out why his story has been lost, buried, and forgotten.
The production was awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant that is one of only 17 of the NEA's 2020 musical theatre grants nationwide.
Gabriel, the Musical's first production was at Firehouse Theatre in Richmond Virginia in September / October 2022. All performances sold out. What's next? Stay tuned for further developments as the authors consider the possibilities!
